About the Desert

Discover Sarfaranga Desert in Shigar, Gilgit Baltistan

Sarfaranga Desert, also spelled Sarfranga and known as the Sarfaranga Cold Desert, lies where the Shigar River meets the Indus River, where Shigar Valley opens into Skardu Valley in Gilgit Baltistan. At about 2,300 metres (7,500 feet), it is one of the highest cold deserts in the world, with vast golden white dunes framed by rugged mountains.
From our resort it is about 58 km, roughly 1.3 hours by road. From Skardu city it is only around 20 to 25 minutes away, and it sits just across the Indus from Katpana Desert.
The desert takes its name from Safaranga village, home to about 1,500 people on the banks of the Shigar River. Since 2017 it has hosted the annual Sarfaranga Jeep Rally every October, with local music and traditional food. Summers are mild and dry, while winter nights can drop below minus 25 degrees.
