About the Mosque

Discover Chaqchan Mosque in Khaplu, Ghanche

Chaqchan Mosque, whose name is often translated as the Miraculous Mosque, is one of the oldest mosques in Baltistan. It stands in Khaplu town in Ghanche District, Gilgit Baltistan, is dated to around 1370, and is listed by the Government of Pakistan as a heritage site. It remains an active place of worship for the Sufi Noorbakhshia community.
From our resort it is about 44 km, roughly 1 hour by road. It sits in the same town as Khaplu Fort, so the two make an easy heritage day together.
Local tradition credits its founding to Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, the scholar who helped spread Islam across the Himalaya, though historians still debate the exact date and founder. The two storey building has a semi basement, a ground floor and a turret on top. Its walls are wooden slabs stacked into a frame and filled with clay, a weatherproof method suited to harsh winters, and its carved wooden jali screens blend Tibetan, Kashmiri, Persian and Mughal styles.
