About the Desert

Discover Katpana Desert in Skardu, Gilgit Baltistan

Katpana Desert, also called the Skardu Cold Desert or Biang-a Naqpo, lies in Skardu Valley, Gilgit Baltistan. At about 2,226 metres (7,303 feet) above sea level, it is one of the highest deserts in the world, with large sand dunes that are covered in snow during winter.
From our resort it is about 36 km, roughly 1 hour by road. The most visited part of the desert is beside Katpana Lake, close to Skardu International Airport, and the sands stretch from the banks of the Indus River north towards New Ranga village.
Summer days can reach about 27 degrees, while December and January nights fall below minus 17 degrees, which is why golden dunes and white snow can share the same view. A freshwater lake beside the dunes and the surrounding mountains complete one of Baltistan’s most unusual landscapes.
