About the Fort

Discover Shigar Fort in Shigar Valley, Gilgit Baltistan

Shigar Fort, known locally as Fong Khar or the Palace on the Rock, is a 17th century royal palace of the Amacha dynasty in Shigar Valley, Gilgit Baltistan. Built on a huge granite boulder at the foot of a steep rock above the village, it is one of the finest surviving examples of Balti palace architecture.
From our resort it is about 60 km, roughly 1.4 hours by road. From Skardu it is about 32 km, a drive of around 45 minutes from Skardu Airport.
The Aga Khan Trust for Culture restored the fort between 1999 and 2005, keeping its original mud, stone and timber, carved woodwork, screens and bed niches. Its grand audience hall is now a museum of Balti culture, and its design blends Tibetan, Kashmiri and Central Asian influences. Part of the complex also operates as a heritage hotel.
