About the Fort

Discover Khaplu Fort in Ghanche, Gilgit Baltistan

Khaplu Fort, also known as Khaplu Palace or Yabgo Khar, is the former royal residence of the Yabgo rulers in Ghanche District, Gilgit Baltistan. It was built in 1840 by Raja Daulat Ali Khan and stands on raised ground north of the town, with the Shyok River below and the Karakoram behind, at about 2,600 metres.
From our resort it is about 42 km, roughly 1 hour by road, which makes it one of the easiest heritage visits in the region.
Its design blends Tibetan, Kashmiri, Ladakhi, Balti and Central Asian styles, built from timber, mud brick and clay, with a wooden ceiling made without nails. The Aga Khan Trust for Culture restored it between 2005 and 2011, and the work won a UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Award of Distinction in 2013. Today it houses a museum on the history and culture of Baltistan.
